10-11-2008: LimeGreen helps the General Medical Council communicate with doctors
The General Medical Council asked LimeGreen, in conjunction with our regular clients Doctors.net.uk, to help find out what the medical profession feels about changes to confidentiality rights for patients.
Doctors know the importance to their own credibility of keeping their patients' circumstances confidential. But they often struggle with the rules about when they should disclose certain information for ethical, legal or medical research purposes. The GMC is undertaking consultation on this highly important area for medics and patients alike.
Sir Graeme Catto, President of the GMC, told LimeGreen "About twenty-five per cent of all the enquiries we get at the GMC are about confidentiality and the majority of those are from doctors. It's something they feel strongly about but it can make them feel quite insecure... It's really important that we get doctors' input into these issues as we write new guidance."
"We must keep the balance right between what should be disclosed in the public interest and what needs to be kept confidential for individual patients. Our guidance will give some indication about how that balance can be achieved."
